Capturing the Perseid Meteor Shower in Scotland: A Night to Remember with My Canon R5 and Volvo XC40

As a car photographer in Scotland, I’m always on the lookout for opportunities to blend my passion for cars with the breathtaking landscapes that Scotland offers. On the 12th of August 2024, I set out to photograph the Perseid meteor shower—an annual celestial event that is both challenging and rewarding to capture. Armed with my Canon R5 and an old but dependable 35mm f/1.4 lens, I journeyed into the Scottish Highlands for a night of photography that would leave a lasting impression. I of course, decided to incorporate the Volvo XC40 into my shots, merging those brilliant wee stars with a car.

Journey into the Highlands

The Scottish Highlands are a photographer’s paradise, offering some of the darkest skies in the UK, perfect for astrophotography. At 10pm, I left the lights of my town behind with my good friend Neil and we drove deep into the Highlands, the Volvo XC40 handling the rugged terrain with ease. The excitement of capturing the Perseid meteor shower kept us energised as we navigated the winding roads under a sky already starting to twinkle with stars.

The Gear: Canon R5 and 35mm f/1.4 Lens

While most astrophotographers might lean towards super-wide lenses to capture as much of the sky as possible, I opted for my 35mm f/1.4 lens. The Canon R5’s full-frame sensor paired with this lens offered just the right balance between field of view and intimacy, allowing me to focus on specific areas of the sky without losing the grandeur of the meteor shower. The f/1.4 aperture was invaluable, pulling in the faint light of distant stars and the bright streaks of meteors with stunning clarity. The decision to use this lens, despite it being an older model, turned out to be a game-changer.

The Volvo XC40 Under the Stars

Incorporating the Volvo XC40 into my shots was a natural choice. Its modern, stylish design provided a perfect contrast to the raw, natural beauty of the night sky. We positioned the car strategically within my compositions, using the headlights to softly illuminate the foreground while the stars and meteors filled the sky above. The XC40’s silhouette against the backdrop of the meteor shower added a dramatic, almost cinematic feel to the images.

Photographing cars under the starry skies of Scotland requires careful planning and a bit of creativity. Here are some tips based on my experience:

1. Location: Choose a location with minimal light pollution. The Highlands offer dark skies and rugged landscapes that make for stunning backdrops.

2. Timing: Plan your shoot around a meteor shower like the Perseids, or when the Milky Way is prominent. This adds an extra layer of interest to your shots.

3. Gear: A fast lens with a wide aperture, like my 35mm f/1.4, is essential for capturing the faint light of the stars. The Canon R5’s excellent low-light performance made it the perfect companion.

4. Composition: Position the car in the foreground with the night sky as a backdrop. Use the car’s lights creatively to illuminate the scene.

5. Settings: Use a tripod, set your camera to manual mode and start with a low ISO, wide aperture and longer exposure. Tweak your settings as needed to achieve the perfect balance between the car and the stars.

A Night of Stellar Photography

From midnight until 4am, we were completely immersed in the experience, capturing image after image of the Perseid meteor shower, the Volvo XC40 and the vast Scottish sky. The combination of the car and the stars created a series of images that were both striking and evocative. The 35mm lens allowed me to frame the XC40 in a way that highlighted its features while still capturing the awe-inspiring beauty of the meteor shower.

Northern Lights in Scotland March 2023 (Loch Lomond & Audi A6 for Car Photography)

Capturing the Northern Lights is a dream of many photographers and nature lovers alike. It's a phenomenon that can be seen only in certain parts of the world and Scotland is lucky enough to be one of them. Loch Lomond with its dark skies and stunning scenery is a popular spot for aurora hunters and as a car photographer I decided to combine my passion for cars with my love for the Northern Lights. In this blog I'll take you through my experience of capturing this magical moment with the help of my trusty Audi A6.

Planning the Shoot

To capture the Northern Lights you need a clear night with no clouds and the aurora forecast should be good. The aurora is a natural light display that occurs when charged particles from the sun enter the earth's atmosphere and collide with its gases causing a spectacular light show. To ensure I captured the best possible images I checked the aurora forecast website to know the best time to head out. Since I was incorporating my Audi A6 into the shoot I needed to find a location that would complement the car and the aurora. Loch Lomond is known for its stunning landscapes and I knew that it would be the perfect spot for my shoot. I decided to head to a remote area near the loch where I could capture the aurora without any light pollution. I made sure to carry all the necessary gear including my camera tripod extra batteries and warm clothing is KEY!! ( took 3 jackets and was still freezing :) 

The Shoot

I left my house at 11 pm and drove for about an hour to reach my chosen location. It was a clear night with no clouds and I could already see a faint green glow in the sky. As I reached the location I parked my Audi A6 and set up my camera and tripod. I used my Canon EOS R5 camera which has a high ISO range and excellent low-light performance. I attached my 24-70 2.8 RF L Series wide-angle lens to capture as much of the aurora and the landscape as possible.I took some test shots to check the camera settings and made some adjustments based on the light conditions. The aurora was slowly getting brighter and I could see a green and pink hue spreading across the sky. I positioned my Audi A6 in front of the camera using it as a prop to add interest and depth to the shot. The car's sleek lines and elegant design complemented the natural beauty of the aurora. As the aurora became more intense I experimented with different camera settings to capture the movement and colours of the lights. I used a long exposure of around 20 seconds to capture the movement of the lights and bring out the vibrant colours. I also adjusted the aperture to control the depth of field and the ISO to maintain the image's quality.

It was a magical moment standing in the dark with my camera capturing the beauty of the Northern Lights. The aurora was dancing across the sky with shades of green pink and purple blending together in a mesmerizing display. The Audi A6 added a touch of luxury and sophistication to the shot making it stand out from the usual Northern Lights images.

I stayed out until 4 am capturing as many shots as possible before the aurora faded away. As the sun started to rise I packed up my gear and headed back to my car. The Audi A6 had been the perfect partner for this shoot providing me with comfort space and a touch of elegance throughout the long night.

Post-Processing

After the shoot I imported the images into my computer and started to edit them. I used Adobe Lightroom to adjust the exposure contrast and colour balance of each image bringing out the best of the Northern Lights and the Audi A6. I added some sharpening and noise reduction to ensure the images looked crisp and clean. In some images I enhanced the aurora's colours to make them look more vibrant and dynamic while in others I toned down the colours to create a more subtle and moody effect. I also cropped some images to focus on specific details such as the car's headlights or the trees in the background.

Lessons Learned and maybe tips for the future

Capturing the Northern Lights can be challenging but it's also a rewarding experience. Here are some lessons I learned from my shoot:

1. Check the aurora forecast: To capture the best possible images make sure to check the aurora forecast website beforehand. This will give you an idea of when and where the aurora will be visible. ( I used an app called Aurora Watch)

2. Bring the right gear: Make sure to bring all the necessary gear including your camera tripod extra batteries and warm clothing. It can get cold and windy out there so it's essential to be prepared.

3. Experiment with different settings: The Northern Lights are constantly moving and changing so it's important to experiment with different camera settings to capture their movement and colours.

4. Incorporate props: If you're a car photographer consider incorporating a car into the shoot to add interest and depth to the images. The car can be used as a prop providing a focal point and a touch of luxury.

5. Be patient: Capturing the Northern Lights can take time so it's important to be patient and wait for the aurora to appear. Don't give up too soon as the best moments can often happen when you least expect them.

All-new BMW M3 Touring Photographed at Knockhill Race Track. My First time photographing a car on a racetrack.

As an automotive photographer  I've always been excited to photograph the latest and greatest cars but when I heard that the all-new BMW M3 Touring was coming out…….. I knew that we had to do something out the box for this car. It’s particularly special because it marks the first time in nearly 40 years that the iconic BMW M3 has been offered as an estate (Touring) car and I wanted to show this evolution by capturing all previous generations of M3s in the same photoshoot.

To make this happen I reached out to my man and BMW enthusiast Omar who was able to source all the previous generations of the M3 for me. This included the E36 Evo, E90, and F80 which we brought to the photoshoot location at Knockhill Racing Circuit. Exciting day let me tell you.

As we arrived at the location, I was eager to start shooting the M3 Touring. I had brought along two of my favourite camera bodies, the Canon R5 and the Canon R6 and a bunch of lenses to capture the car from different angles. I also had the new DJI Mavic 3 with me, which I planned to use to capture some aerial shots of the car. (I also crashed this during one of the shots!) We had also enlisted Project21 to detail the cars - I couldn’t trust anyone else but Gav for this shoot.

To help me get the perfect shot we had the help of legendary racing driver Gordon Shedden. Shedden is a three-time British Touring Car Champion and I knew that he would be able to drive the M3 Touring in a way that would really show off its capabilities.

We started off by taking some traditional shots of the M3 Touring from different angles. I wanted to capture the car's sporty design while also showing off its practicality as an estate car. The Canon R5 & R6 were perfect for this - allowing me to get sharp, detailed shots from different focal lengths. (I actually use the R6 for all my video work.)

Once we had taken some traditional shots, we moved on to more creative shots. I wanted to show the M3 Touring in action so we had Shedden drive the car around the track at high speeds. This allowed me to capture some amazing action shots of the car, with its wheels spinning and the engine roaring. I was particularly happy with the shots that I captured using the Canon R5's awesome high-speed burst mode, which allowed me to capture multiple shots in quick succession.

After we had captured some decent shots of  the M3 Touring, we moved on to the previous generations of M3s that Omar had sourced for us. I was excited to have these iconic cars alongside the latest M3 Touring as it would allow me to show how the M3 has evolved over the years. We positioned the cars in a row with the M3 Touring at the front and the previous generations behind it and boom!

I used a variety of techniques to capture the previous generations of M3s. For the E36, I wanted to capture the car's angular lines and aggressive styling so I used a combination of low-angle shots and close-ups to highlight the car's details. For the E90, I focused on capturing the car's boxy lines, using high-angle shots and close-ups to showcase the car's features. For the F80 - I wanted to show the car's modern design, so I used a combination of low-angle shots and wide-angle shots to highlight the car's shape.

As always I was impressed by the capabilities of the Canon R5 and R6. These cameras are some of the best on the market with high resolution, fast autofocus, and excellent image speeds and in challenging lighting conditions. The DJI Mavic 3 was also a great addition to my gear allowing me to capture stunning aerial shots of the M3 Touring and the previous generations of M3s.

As the photoshoot came to an end I was thrilled with the shots that we had captured. I knew that these photos would be a great addition to my portfolio, and I couldn't wait to share them with the world.

Being able to capture the evolution of this iconic car was a real privilege and having Gordon Shedden drive the car for us was the icing on the cake. I hope these photos will be a great addition to my portfolio and I'm excited to see them being shared across social media and other platforms!

Photographing Ultrafabrics Interior in the 2023 Range Rover for Land Rover UK.

As a car photographer taking on a project for an incredible brand like Land Rover is both exciting and challenging. For my first photography project for Land Rover UK I was tasked with photographing the Ultrafabrics interiors in the 2023 Range Rover SV. The goal was to showcase the high quality materials and craftsmanship that went into the design and production of the vehicle. To ensure that I captured the best possible images I decided to rent a studio that would provide the ideal setting for the photoshoot. The studio I chose was equipped with high-quality lighting and background options giving me the flexibility to create the desired look and feel for each shot. Once the studio was set up I started to plan out the photoshoot and how I was going to light up the interior shots. I knew that lighting was going to play a critical role in bringing out the beauty and detail of the Ultrafabrics interiors. So I decided to use multiple lights to create the perfect lighting scenario. For the main light source, I used a large softboxx that provided a broad even light. This was positioned overhead and slightly angled down to provide a soft and flattering light on the interior. I then used two additional lights to fill in any shadows and add depth to the images. These lights were positioned on either side of the vehicle and aimed inward to provide a soft, warm glow that brought out the textures and details of the Ultrafabrics.

I also used a fourth light to highlight specific areas of the interior that I wanted to draw the viewer's attention to. This light was positioned at a lower angle and aimed upwards providing a more dramatic and directional light. This helped to create a sense of depth and add a dramatic feel to the shots. Once the lighting was set up I began shooting the interiors of the Range Rover. We started with the front seats capturing different angles and perspectives to showcase the luxurious feel of the Ultrafabrics. We then moved to the back seats and repeated the process making sure to capture the same level of detail and quality in each shot.

Throughout the photoshoot I made sure to keep a close eye on the lighting and adjust it as needed to ensure that the images captured the beauty and quality of the Ultrafabrics interiors. I also made sure to adjust the camera settings to get the best possible exposure paying attention to things like shutter speed aperture  and ISO. After the photoshoot was complete I selected the best images and started the post-production process. This involved adjusting the colour  brightness and contrast of each image to ensure that they looked their best. I also did some minor retouching, removing any distracting elements and sharpening the images to bring out the detail and texture of the Ultrafabrics interiors. I must admit photographing the Ultrafabrics interiors in the 2023 Range Rover for Land Rover UK was a challenge but incredibly rewarding project. By renting a studio and using multiple lights to light up the interior shots - I was able to capture images that showcased the high quality materials and craftsmanship that went into the design and production of the vehicle. I am super proud of the final images and am grateful for the opportunity to work with such a well-known and respected brand.

Photographed the all new Volkswagen ID Buzz Van in Scotland 2023.

Last week, my dad and I had the opportunity to photograph the brand new Volkswagen ID.Buzz in the picturesque Scottish countryside. As a car photographer & enthusiast, we were excited to get our hands on this futuristic electric vehicle and capture its sleek and modern design in the natural beauty of Scotland.

We began our day by scouting out the perfect location for the shoot. We wanted to find a spot that would showcase the ID.Buzz's unique design and futuristic features, while also highlighting the stunning Scottish landscape. After some searching, we settled on a winding country road with rolling hills and a picturesque loch in the background.

Once we had our location, we set up our equipment and began the photoshoot. The ID.Buzz was an absolute pleasure to photograph, with its sleek lines and futuristic design. The electric blue color of the vehicle really popped against the natural greens and blues of the Scottish landscape, making for some truly striking images.

One of the things that makes the ID.Buzz so unique is its fully electric powertrain, so we made sure to capture the car's clean and eco-friendly design in our shots. We photographed the car from a variety of angles, highlighting the smooth lines of the body and the unique LED lights.

We also made sure to capture the car in motion, to show off its powerful acceleration and smooth handling. My dad and I set up a tracking shot, following the ID.Buzz as it drove down the winding country road, giving a sense of the car's speed and agility.

As the day went on, we continued to experiment with different lighting and compositions to capture the ID.Buzz in the most dynamic way possible. We used a variety of lenses and camera settings to capture different perspectives and make the most of the natural light.

One of the highlights of the day was capturing the car at sunset, with the warm golden light casting a beautiful glow on the ID.Buzz's electric blue body. The reflections of the sunset on the car's bodywork and the loch in the background made for some truly breathtaking shots.

Overall, it was an incredible experience to photograph the new Volkswagen ID.Buzz in the beautiful Scottish countryside. The car's futuristic design and clean powertrain were a perfect match for the natural beauty of Scotland, and we couldn't be happier with the results of the photoshoot.

To stay competitive and on top of your game as a commercial car photographer, it’s important to continually learn and adapt to new technologies and techniques. First Time Ever My Images Have Been Featured in a Car Magazine (Total BMW)

I am beyond excited to share that my images have been featured in Total BMW Magazine for the first time in my career! This has been a dream come true and a goal that I have been working towards for years. To give some background, I have always been passionate about photography, especially when it comes to cars. There is just something about the sleek lines and powerful engines of BMWs that really speaks to me and inspires me to capture the essence of the brand through my lens. I first became interested in car photography a few years ago, when I started attending car shows and events in my local area. I was drawn in by the beauty of the cars and the camaraderie of the car enthusiasts who attended these events. I started bringing my camera along and taking photos of the various models on display (first ever car I photographed was a Honda Civic Jordan at a car show in Scotland!). As I continued to develop my skills and build my portfolio, I began to look for opportunities to showcase my work. I submitted some of my photos to various online galleries and forums, and even entered a few contests. But despite my efforts, I never seemed to hit the mark that was required. That is, until I received an email from the editor of Total BMW Magazine and were interested in featuring a very well known BMW 740i Schnitzer for an upcoming issue. I was absolutely thrilled at the opportunity and immediately accepted. The process of getting my images published in the magazine was a bit of a whirlwind. The editor sent me a list of specific photos that they wanted to use, and I had to make sure that I had the high resolution versions of those images ready to go. I also had to sign a contract and release form, giving the magazine permission to use my photos. Once all of the paperwork was taken care of, it was time to prepare for the photo shoot. The photo shoot was a lot of fun, and I was able to get some great shots of the truly stunning car. I couldn't wait to see my images in print, and I was thrilled when the issue finally hit newsstands. Seeing my photos in Total BMW Magazine was a huge milestone for me, and it was a validation of all the hard work and dedication that I had put into my photography. It was also an incredible feeling to know that my images were being seen by such a large and passionate audience. Since my images were featured in the magazine, I have received a lot of positive feedback and support from the automotive community. I am so grateful for the opportunity to have my images featured in Total BMW Magazine, and I am excited to see what the future holds for my photography career. I will continue to work hard and pursue my passions, and I hope to have many more opportunities like this in the future.

In this blog, I will share with you my approach to car photography and how I use my Canon R5 and EF/RF lenses to capture stunning images of vehicles in Scotland.

First and foremost, it's important to have a clear vision and concept in mind before beginning a car photoshoot. This could be anything from highlighting the sleek lines and curves of a sports car to capturing the ruggedness and power of an off-road vehicle.

Once I have a clear idea of what I want to achieve, I begin scouting locations. Scotland is home to some of the most diverse and stunning landscapes in the world, from rolling green hills and rugged coastlines to towering mountain ranges and picturesque lochs. I spend a lot of time researching and visiting potential locations to find the perfect setting for each photoshoot.

When it comes to equipment, I rely on my Canon R5 and a selection of RF lenses to capture the perfect shot. The Canon R5 is a full-frame mirrorless camera with 45 megapixels of resolution, which allows me to capture incredibly detailed and high-quality images. I also love the versatility of the RF/EF lenses, which offer a wide range of focal lengths and aperture options to suit a variety of shooting situations.

One of my favorite EF lenses for car photography is the Canon EF 70-200mm F2.8L IS USM II. This lens is perfect for capturing close-up shots of car details, such as wheels or grilles, as well as full-length shots of the vehicle. The fast F2.8 aperture also allows me to create beautiful bokeh and isolate the car from the background.

For wider shots, I often use the Canon EF 16-35mm F2.8L IS USM lens. This lens is great for capturing sweeping landscapes and establishing shots of the car in its environment.

Lighting is also a crucial element in car photography. I always try to take advantage of natural light, using the time of day and weather conditions to my advantage. Golden hour, just before sunrise and just after sunset, is a particularly magical time for car photography, as the soft, warm light creates a beautiful, natural glow on the vehicle.

When working with artificial light, I use a combination of strobes and continuous lights to highlight specific features of the car and add dimension to the image. I also pay close attention to reflections, as these can be used to add depth and detail to the image.

Post-processing is another important aspect of car photography. I use Adobe Photoshop to enhance the colors, contrast, and overall aesthetic of the image. I also use these tools to remove any distractions or imperfections in the background.

Photographed this lovely red BMW 5 Series in Edinburgh, Scotland last week. The Ferrari Red really helps enhance the cars’ lines and body shape considerably more. At first I didn’t think 5 Series BMW should be in that colour however, I was then reminded; in the 1990s majority of BMW E34 5 Series used to be finished in Red (Hellrot Light Red), so I zipped it and just took the photos….enjoy.

Recalling the Legendary Datsun 240Z – Specs & Features

Some sports cars from the past have always received special attention from car lovers, and to date, this stands true for the Datsun 240Z. Originally named as Nissan S30, Datsun 240Z belongs to the first generation of Nissan’s iconic Z GT series of two-seat coupes. Last year, this fabulous sports car from the 60s marked its 50 years' marvelous history as one of the successful sports cars by Nissan_ continued from 1969 to 1978.

Initially, Nissan’s Z car got famous in Japan only, but later with the coming of 240Z, it made its way to UK and US markets. With its sleek body styling, impressive power and modern designing of that era, this car won the hearts of racing enthusiasts. And its low price was the icing on the cake for the public to see it as their favorite car.

Datsun 240Z History

Yutaka Katayama who was president of Nissan Motors USA was the person who introduced 240Z in 1970. The mission behind this was to fill the market gap for small sports cars inspired by British manufactured 1500 Fairlady roadster that was considered a success.

Later on, Nissan manufactured its own 240Z called as S30 Fairlady Z in America. When released in the market, it was sold at a starting price of $3526 in 1969 – a very much fair price at that time.

Datsun 240Z specs

Datsun 240Z – the three-door hatchback coupe is a front-engine, rear-wheel-drive car. It has a sleek and stylish coupe body with round-shaped headlights. Under its hood, there is anL20 2.0-litre straight-six SOHC engine that churns out 130 hp (96 kW) combined with a five-speed manual transmission.

The new 2020 Porsche 911 Targa.

Available as both a Targa 4 and Targa 4S, they feature the famous fully automatic retractable roof and, just like the legendary 1965 original, the characteristic wide roll hoop and wraparound rear window. Power for the Targa models is true to the Porsche 911 tradition in its use of a charismatic flat-six, rear-mounted engine.

Like its Coupé and Cabriolet siblings, the 3.0-litre flat-six engine with twin turbochargers in the 911 Targa 4 now delivers 385 PS (+15 PS). In combination with the optional Sport Chrono package, acceleration from 0-62 mph is possible in 4.2 seconds – one tenth faster than before. Where permitted, top speed of the 911 Targa 4 is 180 mph. WLTP Combined fuel consumption is 25.9 – 26.9 mpg, equivalent to 239 – 247 g/km CO2 Combined. The flat-six engine in the 911 Targa 4S offers 450 PS (+30 PS) and accelerates from 0-62 mph in 3.6 seconds under the same conditions – four tenths faster than its predecessor. 30 years of the BMW M3 – the story behind the legend.

2016 marked the 30th anniversary of a motoring icon, one which revolutionised the mid-size sports car segment when its production started in 1986.

The very first BMW M3 set a new standard by which other carmakers would be measured – and, five model generations later, are still judged today. BMW Motorsport Division, the precursor to BMW M Division, was incredibly rigorous in its deployment of undiluted motor racing technology in the development of the first-generation BMW M3. Its endeavours produced a thoroughbred high-performance sports car – based on the series-produced BMW 3 Series – that was perfectly suited to daily use. Over the three decades that have followed, BMW M has gently refined its trailblazing and highly successful creation from one generation to the next, while always taking great care to preserve the original character of the M3. The upshot is that there is arguably still no other car that blends such prominently honed motor sport genes and uncompromised everyday practicality into such an emotionally stirring overall package. The 30th anniversary of the BMW M3 provides an ideal opportunity to look back at four highly intriguing model variants that, for various reasons, never made it past the prototype stage. Jaguar F-Type Automotive Photography in Aberdeen Scotland.

Here's one of my favourite spots in Aberdeen. It's quite nerve-wracking driving a brand new car down there but the results are worth it. I was given the keys to this Jaguar F-Type for a few hours late last year and loved it.
